Geek recommendations of the week

This week was a very busy week for me, with a lot of work and interesting projects and I hope to continue in this rhythm for the rest of the month. However, I also used my time in a very good way, thanks to Rescue Time application and thus, I limited my social media presence to the basic communication.

Out of my geek's pocket, a couple of recommendations for the week:

As a dedicated Twitter user, I will start by recommending Tweetcast that I often noticed recommended  by many people interested in mobile Twitter applications. It offers not only multi-account support, but also a good management of the profiles of interesting users from your followers lists, and of the topics of interest.

If you are a well organized person and you want to have a good control over your time, you should immediately start using - for free - Evernote. It can be accessed from every device and it helps you to save ideas and information in order to be used later on.

If you are better with the voice notes and you are using an Android, then you should try for less than $2 Dictadroid. All your voice recordings - including music, could be shared automatically via e-mail. Now, your secretary will not have any reason to complain that she did not hear you when you asked her to do something as soon as possible.

A couple of yours ago, when I left a job for another, an important part of my box was represented by the business cards. Many of them did not know that I have and most part of them were lost anyway since then. Nowadays, you can carry your office with you from a job to another and thanks to ABBYY Business Card Reader all the information on your business cards is digitized and collected by your contact manager. You will automatically have when you need all the phone numbers and e-mails and any other contact information on your business card.

Twitter is launching Wednesday a photo sharing service

What we (suppose to) know by now: it will be similar to TwitPic and YFrog. It could be the beginning of a new step in expanding the service and gaining more autonomy.
Let's wait till tomorrow.

Where you've been when Osama was killed?

Early 1950s Television SetImage by gbaku via Flickr
My personal story: for the history of the online world - I was sleeping. When I woke up, I didn't switch on the TV set or open the website of my favorite international newspapers. Not at all, I logged to my Twitter account and to my Facebook account. Since then - the last 5 hourst - I am permanently browsing social media for updates.

But ten years ago... when 11/9 occured, I was in the front of the TV. For a final confirmation, I called several of my friends from NYC asking them what it is all about... The whole operation lasted about 5 hours.

What about you? What kind of recent experience do you have with social media as a source of direct news and information?

Me and Twitter

I am a passionate user of Twitter and especially in the last year I learned a lot about how to use it and made reliable connections with other Twitter users.
However, I have a couple of frustrations about:
- Wish I can have more interactive tools, mostly chat-wise, mostly for the lists you are in.
- 140 words it's a good ratio, but maybe in some cases the conversation is strictly limited.
- The new Twitter looks very clumsy and hard to manage properly.
- Excepting this new Twitter, there are not too much features introduced regularly, despite a need for improvement.
- I wish that, following Facebook's example, to restrict permanently the access to my information of somebody I blocked. It's fair like that, isn't it?
That's all for now. I should prepare my list of #FF.

First hand experiences with Tumblr

Image representing Tumblr as depicted in Crunc...Image via CrunchBase
My e-learning plan for this month was to learn how to use WordPress and Tumblr. The first wish was the included too in plan for the last three months, but probably my time management was a failure lately.
It is how I started first with tumblr. I am still at the beginning, trying to figure out various kind of applications, available or not, from a format to another. But, this is the third day of actively using it, so I don't expect technical wonders.
The first hand experiences by now are positive. Sometimes, I am a bit excited. I am a dedicated user of blogger since 2007. Some of my blogs are successful, some of them not at all, up to the time I dedicated to their promotion and as long as I provided proper content. Despite the high quality content and the active involvement, I am extremely unhappy with the level of interactivity. In the case of tumblr, in the first day of blogging, without any effort of promotion, I had registered traffic and started the dialogue with my followers. The re-blog option - the Re-Tweet version - is a treasure for sharing and commenting ideas. I will continue discovering the hidden treasures of tumblr, and advancing with the professional use of WordPress.
Happy blogging day!

Saving time on Twitter

A couple of tips via The Mashable, to think about during the w/e.

Do you still rely on blogging?

If you'll ask me, I will definitely answer "yes"! Twitter and Facebook are useful tools, but nothing more than tools, for widespreading information on facts and figures and ideas. But still, you need to provide a reliable base and this is made of your coherent ideas that you can express and introduce on your blog(s). I still trust it!

Twitter burnout?

Take a cup of tea/or coffee/or milk or whatever you want to, and read this.
And maybe take a long walk too. It might help.

On customers, sellers and digital "body language"

I attended recently a webinar on using social media to increase sales. I am not into sales and my chances to ever get into it are very slim, but I am extremely interested about the general process of interaction and communication between customers and clients in the new 2.0 world.
What I've learned about or remembered is that:
- the customers have more control over the products and are imposing their own demands - we are buying faster than the sellers are developing;
- information is vital and your brand is not only what you say it is, but what people says it is - social media is very important and the discourse provided on various tools - Twitter, Facebook, youtube - is providing at a great extent the image of your company and the content of your brand;
- for sales, YouTube is very important: setting up an account and posting a smart, not exclusively expensive, video about your product is a good idea for attracting more customers;
- Twitter is helpful in offering various coupons for the existing or potential clients;
One of the conclusions of the webinar, going beyond the strict domain of sales is that social media requires new skills: as, for example, the ability how to find the best key-words, or how to read a link. The expression of the week was: "digital body language" - I am still thinking about how to better use it.

Surprises from Hotmail

List of cookiesImage via Wikipedia//Surprise, surprise, from Hotmail

The 2011 fortune cookie for some of the Hotmail account holders - approximately 17,335 users - was the disappearance of some of their e-mails (if not all of them). The situation was reestablished today, but the causes are still under investigation. If it was a bug or not, we don't know yet.
I am not a constant user of Hotmail (accessing the account once the month, maybe) but I still keep this address by nostalgia: it was my first ever e-mail account, opened in 1996. Most part of the friends I used to talk with through msn are on Gmail, few on Yahoo and more and more on Facebook or Twitter. But still, I think that you need to have a harsh competition between various providers, which will encourage following high-stakes. Almost one year ago, Microsoft announced a rebranding of Hotmail. The offer by now was to upgrade to the services already offered by the other e-mail providers.

Writers on Twitter

This is not only a trendy attitude, but a must-be: writers on Twitter are increasing their branding, introducing directly themselves and talking with their potential and actual readers. Of course, the main condition is to have what to talk about - I mean good and interesting books!

The best social media tool of the year: Twitter

Expedition 20 Flight Engineers Jeff Williams, ...Image via Wikipedia
I was very active this year on the front of social media, trying at least every day to learn something new, to discover a new application or simply to improve my 2.0 skills. My main focus was to explore how the 2.0 changed our way of life, and I was extremely interested in the influence of the virtual world on the academic life and research.
The best benefits I took from Twitter. I created an account one year and a half ago, but started to use on a daily basis only in March. And, since then, it plays a big part of my virtual life. I found there very interesting people, extremely good resources for what I am interested in and lots of opportunities for expanding my knowledge, including in the area of foreign languages - trying to use my foreign languages for short but efficient communication.
For the next year, I would like to explore more Foursquare for example, as it is a very good tool for marketing and promotion of places and products, but I am sure that Twitter will continue to be a good medium for communication. And, of course, would like to see what's the next diamond in the 2.0 crown.
Wait and see!

Mister Wong and me

While trying to fight with the WordPress blog settings - this is the newest entry in my always expanding media empire, and will share more about this soon - I discovered Mister Wong. What it is the connection: as I am trying to build a blog hosted by a German website, this Mister was recommended as a link to be used for sharing the latest updates. By curiosity, went on Google for a complex search and was happy to get in touch with the German site for social bookmarking. You can save all your favorite websites to your personal account and share it with other people from your network. The site is a direct competitor to del.icio.us and have the advantage of focusing exclusively on the German speaking realm. Recently, there were launched versions in Russian and Chinese. Equally, you can benefit of mobile support, accessing your account and saving your links of interest directly from your cellphone.
You can connect via icq, Skype, Yahoo, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, to access a FreeDigital Library. As privacy is a permanent matter of concern in Germany, the site is offering you the possibility to chose if you want to have your profile private or/and public. Also, you can access a Free Digital Library.
I am wondering if it is any similar website in French - as my blog I will start soon - when WordPress will be kind enough to share its secrets with me?

Six Social Media Trends

Image representing Foursquare Solutions as dep...Image via CrunchBase
The last weeks of 2010: time for evaluations and predictions.
Here is one of them, about Six Social Media Trends.
As for me, I will bet a lot on Foursquare like networks, in terms of increasing profits and creating content and targeted relationships. In terms of innovation, I am sure there will be a couple of small but long term ideas that will orient the more and more intricated networks for turning them into smart tools - for consumers and users and companies - taking into account the feed-back offered by the users themselves. I am curious what Google will offer in this respect.
Here is another interesting article I've read today, about the limits of the Facebook-based activism, by Malcom Galdwell. All we need: people able to use the content and the opportunity of the network. The 2.0 citizen is on the run for the moment.
