Twitter is launching Wednesday a photo sharing service

What we (suppose to) know by now: it will be similar to TwitPic and YFrog. It could be the beginning of a new step in expanding the service and gaining more autonomy.
Let's wait till tomorrow.

Where you've been when Osama was killed?

Early 1950s Television SetImage by gbaku via Flickr
My personal story: for the history of the online world - I was sleeping. When I woke up, I didn't switch on the TV set or open the website of my favorite international newspapers. Not at all, I logged to my Twitter account and to my Facebook account. Since then - the last 5 hourst - I am permanently browsing social media for updates.

But ten years ago... when 11/9 occured, I was in the front of the TV. For a final confirmation, I called several of my friends from NYC asking them what it is all about... The whole operation lasted about 5 hours.

What about you? What kind of recent experience do you have with social media as a source of direct news and information?

Books about the 2.0 world

The latest titles, in German. As usual, I can't stop being surprised about the high level of theoretical discussions about social media, in comparison with the clumsy approached I've encountered very often in the real and practical playground.

Me and Twitter

I am a passionate user of Twitter and especially in the last year I learned a lot about how to use it and made reliable connections with other Twitter users.
However, I have a couple of frustrations about:
- Wish I can have more interactive tools, mostly chat-wise, mostly for the lists you are in.
- 140 words it's a good ratio, but maybe in some cases the conversation is strictly limited.
- The new Twitter looks very clumsy and hard to manage properly.
- Excepting this new Twitter, there are not too much features introduced regularly, despite a need for improvement.
- I wish that, following Facebook's example, to restrict permanently the access to my information of somebody I blocked. It's fair like that, isn't it?
That's all for now. I should prepare my list of #FF.

First hand experiences with Tumblr

Image representing Tumblr as depicted in Crunc...Image via CrunchBase
My e-learning plan for this month was to learn how to use WordPress and Tumblr. The first wish was the included too in plan for the last three months, but probably my time management was a failure lately.
It is how I started first with tumblr. I am still at the beginning, trying to figure out various kind of applications, available or not, from a format to another. But, this is the third day of actively using it, so I don't expect technical wonders.
The first hand experiences by now are positive. Sometimes, I am a bit excited. I am a dedicated user of blogger since 2007. Some of my blogs are successful, some of them not at all, up to the time I dedicated to their promotion and as long as I provided proper content. Despite the high quality content and the active involvement, I am extremely unhappy with the level of interactivity. In the case of tumblr, in the first day of blogging, without any effort of promotion, I had registered traffic and started the dialogue with my followers. The re-blog option - the Re-Tweet version - is a treasure for sharing and commenting ideas. I will continue discovering the hidden treasures of tumblr, and advancing with the professional use of WordPress.
Happy blogging day!

Book review: Selling without selling

Without being a sales person or having any professional trace in this domain, I found a couple of inspiration for my daily professional, academic and even personal journeys in this book Selling without selling. The title in itself is an invitation to open the book and I didn't wait too long until I lost myself for a couple of hours into the comfort of my couch.
Don't expect nothing spectacular from this book. There are many simple reminders we have to deal generally in our social life: control the body language, keeping a medium to high level of social interactivity, use a positive vocabulary, think and observe twice before intervening in a conversation, care and relate to your audience. It might be easy and at the beginning of the book I was about to leave the lecture as convinced that it is nothing new I will learn out of it. But, in fact, although there were well-known ideas and practices, I realized that I didn't use them in a coherent way. Or that despite the fact that practicing some of the advices, the connection with other aspects of my PR and communications activities are rather superficial.
Overall, an easy but useful lecture for a lunch break or for a cloudy Sunday morning!

Google, to promote high-quality sites

Google announced a change of perspective in promoting the blogs and sites, by focusing more on the content than on other "mathematical" aspects - as frequence and number of posts...For me, it is nothing revolutionary, but a welcomed returned to the brains' normality.

Review and win!

This is a very interesting post about the role of online review for increasing the visibility of your business. Of course, it is always a risk - as for example, to do not read permanently nice words about you - but what it is the most important is to be visible and to make people talk about you. And, remember, they are doing for free - no need for special budgets dedicated to ads. Just be creative and you'll win - credibility.

Think unconventional

Looking for better SEO results?

Try to better use AdWords...

Do you still rely on blogging?

If you'll ask me, I will definitely answer "yes"! Twitter and Facebook are useful tools, but nothing more than tools, for widespreading information on facts and figures and ideas. But still, you need to provide a reliable base and this is made of your coherent ideas that you can express and introduce on your blog(s). I still trust it!

Google Application to help locate missing people in Christchurch

An amazing advantage of the social media

Zagat reloaded

Zagat brought new content, features and new opportunities to share your information. The main focus is US, but hope that at the end of the year (maybe) Europe will understand as well the need for an upgrade of its RAM. Who knows?
Apparently, 2.0 eating is more popular than we think!

Zootool

No, it is not a social networks for funky pets...Not at all.
Zootool is a collaborative network collecting, organizing and sharing favorite images, videos and links all over the Internet, created in Germany, but speaking English. After building your profile, you can share links from other platforms as Delicious, Facebook, FriendFeed, Tumblr or Twitter. For the real geeks, it is available as application for Smartphones.

Twitter burnout?

Take a cup of tea/or coffee/or milk or whatever you want to, and read this.
And maybe take a long walk too. It might help.

On customers, sellers and digital "body language"

I attended recently a webinar on using social media to increase sales. I am not into sales and my chances to ever get into it are very slim, but I am extremely interested about the general process of interaction and communication between customers and clients in the new 2.0 world.
What I've learned about or remembered is that:
- the customers have more control over the products and are imposing their own demands - we are buying faster than the sellers are developing;
- information is vital and your brand is not only what you say it is, but what people says it is - social media is very important and the discourse provided on various tools - Twitter, Facebook, youtube - is providing at a great extent the image of your company and the content of your brand;
- for sales, YouTube is very important: setting up an account and posting a smart, not exclusively expensive, video about your product is a good idea for attracting more customers;
- Twitter is helpful in offering various coupons for the existing or potential clients;
One of the conclusions of the webinar, going beyond the strict domain of sales is that social media requires new skills: as, for example, the ability how to find the best key-words, or how to read a link. The expression of the week was: "digital body language" - I am still thinking about how to better use it.

Downloadable links

Today, I realized that I don't have any idea at all about how to set up a PDF or, in general, a .doc for being downloaded on a website. First, I thought it is easy to find an appropriate link at the gadget section. It was not the case - at least for the blogger version I am using currently.
As usual, the last solution was to ask my reliable friend and partner Google.
From a website to another and from a question to another I arrived to www.docstoc.com. Here, you can create an account, upload your document and the following link can be posted on your blog for your readers. They have full access to your book or open document.
As my publishing - online and book writing activity - will impressively increase in the following days, weeks and months, I am looking forward for new tips and trustworthy websites.

About blogging, travel and good marketing

I enjoyed a lot this interview, with a successful blogger passionate about what he is writing about.
From my point of view, doing what you enjoy is the first step to success. Of course, you need lots of effort, passionate dedication and as much time as possible.
Just plant the seeds, take care of the tree and wait.

Starbucks is coffee!?

Starbucks UenoImage via Wikipedia
The redesign of the logo unveiled, for celebrating the 40th anniversary of the icon company, this year: No name, no mention of this is a coffee. If I consider this not a bad strategy for the US and maybe some parts of Europe, I am wondering what it will be the plan of rising awareness in a geographical place where Starbucks is entering the market. There were some moves regarding the rebranding in 2009, preparing in a way the big move.
And, to end in a personal note, a very short and moving note about my love for Starbucks: for me, the big mug of coffee is the symbol of freedom you breath when you are wandering on the streets of NYC or Washington DC. And it will always be, whatever the anti-globalist, anti-corporatists and other "anti-" categories (whose points of view I respect, as long as they don't preach violence). For me, living in a country without a Starbucks was a reminder that I am still far away of my land of freedom.
Nobody's happy, isn't it?

Surprises from Hotmail

List of cookiesImage via Wikipedia//Surprise, surprise, from Hotmail

The 2011 fortune cookie for some of the Hotmail account holders - approximately 17,335 users - was the disappearance of some of their e-mails (if not all of them). The situation was reestablished today, but the causes are still under investigation. If it was a bug or not, we don't know yet.
I am not a constant user of Hotmail (accessing the account once the month, maybe) but I still keep this address by nostalgia: it was my first ever e-mail account, opened in 1996. Most part of the friends I used to talk with through msn are on Gmail, few on Yahoo and more and more on Facebook or Twitter. But still, I think that you need to have a harsh competition between various providers, which will encourage following high-stakes. Almost one year ago, Microsoft announced a rebranding of Hotmail. The offer by now was to upgrade to the services already offered by the other e-mail providers.

My nerd life

I am on the right path of becoming a nerd, probably, otherwise I can't explain rationally the decision I took today, early in the morning, to sign up for Netted, in order to receive daily updates about best sites and applications and any other fresh news about Internet life.

Writers on Twitter

This is not only a trendy attitude, but a must-be: writers on Twitter are increasing their branding, introducing directly themselves and talking with their potential and actual readers. Of course, the main condition is to have what to talk about - I mean good and interesting books!

Happy presentations

If you are preparing this week - the first full working seven days of the year - for some new clients or new projects, or even for a new job, here there are some tips for creative presentations.

Prediction? Have a look at CES 2011

I am very reluctant in making predictions and evaluations about what we can expect in 2011 in the area of PR and communications. But, if I would participate at the 2011 CES, to start late this week, I will be, for sure, able to give you more details about the main trends for this year. Only two days left and we will know more about it!
A wonderful great week everybody!
